The Transport of Covid-19 Vaccines In The Centre Of The Debate

“Managing the COVID-19 vaccine transport is a major challenge for logistics to ensure proper handling of 15 billion doses needed to be shipped worldwide.”

The transport requirements for vaccine shipments will test the agility and resilience of the entire logistic chain, as well as a huge range of new risks that may arise. These include optimal air transportation time, a proper ground handling and transportation infrastructure, local temperatures and other conditions, staff guidance, and staff training.

Huge Challenge To The Logistics, In Africa Too

This week we participated a webinar arranged by Ground Handling International (GHI) focusing on the African aviation market with hundreds of participants and presentations from various stakeholders. Covid-19 and its effects on the aviation industry were, of course, significantly highlighted and we heard the views of various parties on how the transport of vaccines will be handled in the coming years in Africa.

“Africa will require up 1.5 billion doses of Cocid-19 Vaccines to vaccinate 60% of its population of 1.3 billion citizens over the next 2-3 years”

The webinar emphasised the importance of the following themes, on which we can all agree.

  • People – Responsible persons and staff training, effective communication

  • Infrastructure – Storage facilities and equipment, transportation equipment

  • Standards – Service level agreements and procedures, real time and accurate data with records

“An efficient global distribution of the vaccines requires cooperation on global standards and a global harmonisation of processes amongst all stakeholders.”
