Standardised Training Is the Backbone of Safe Ground Handling

Ground handling is one of the most important components of the aviation industry. Every aircraft turnaround depends on the coordinated work of trained professionals responsible for passenger services, baggage handling, ramp operations, catering, and air cargo.

The Challenge of Global Operations

Ground handling teams work in highly dynamic environments where procedures must be followed precisely to ensure safe and efficient aircraft turnarounds. At the same time, aviation companies often operate across multiple locations with multicultural teams and varying operational conditions.

This is why the aviation industry relies on international standards to guide both operations and training.

The Role of International Training Standards

Industry organisations such as International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Aviation Services Association (ASA) have developed frameworks that support safe and consistent ground operations worldwide.

The IATA Airport Handling Manual (AHM 1110) provides globally recognised training standards and best practices for ground handling, helping to align procedures across airlines, airports, and service providers.

Additionally, the ASA World Training Accreditation Programme (ATAP) validates that ground handling training complies with IATA AHM 1100 standards. It helps ensure high-quality, standardised training and offers the added benefit of removing retraining requirements for staff moving between ATAP-accredited organisations, thereby reducing onboarding time.

When employees are trained according to the recognised frameworks, companies can ensure that staff understand and follow the same procedures, safety requirements, and operational expectations regardless of location.

Training providers such as Airport College International support this approach by developing aviation training programmes aligned with recognised international standards and industry best practices.
