Christmas Traditions in Finland

Many Finnish Christmas traditions have remained unchanged for decades, and families continue to cherish and pass them down from one generation to the next.

Christmas Eve is the Most Important

Homes are decorated, and the Christmas tree becomes the heart of the celebration. Some families fetch their tree from the forest, while others buy one from a seller or choose a reusable artificial tree.

Christmas Eve is full of atmosphere and tradition, with soft candlelight, snowball and ice lanterns, and colourful indoor and outdoor decorations. Families enjoy the evening together with a special Christmas dinner, followed by a visit from Joulupukki, the Finnish Santa Claus, who brings gifts and joy.

Sauna - A Special Christmas Tradition

Unlike the usual evening sauna, many families enjoy the Christmas sauna early in the morning or during the day. Saunas have been part of Finnish life for thousands of years and remain deeply rooted in the culture.

A sauna session can provide relaxation, stress relief and improved cardiovascular health making it a perfect way to start the festive day.

Did you know? Finland, a nation of 5.6 million people, has more than three million saunas!

Santa Claus is from Finland

Santa Claus has called Lapland in Northern Finland his home for centuries. The Arctic Circle holds a special place in his heart, as many of the world’s Christmas traditions and magical stories originate from this enchanting region.

Season’s Greetings

We would like to wish you all a very relaxing, peaceful and joyful holiday season. May the coming year bring you good health, happiness and success.
