Airport College International at the IATA Ground Handling Conference (IGHC) Cairo 19-21 May 2026

We were pleased to participate in this year's IATA Ground Handling Conference, held from 19 to 21 May 2026 in Cairo, Egypt. The event brought together aviation and ground handling leaders from around the world to discuss the future of the industry, covering topics ranging from regulation and safety to digital transformation and workforce development.

What Was on the Agenda?

Over the three-day conference, several highly relevant themes emerged that are important to airlines, ground handlers, and training organisations alike.

Discussions highlighted how ground operations are entering a new era shaped by AI, automation, digitalization, and evolving regulatory demands, while continuing to keep people firmly at the centre of the transformation. Key topics included workforce development, human factors, safety culture, and how AI and automation can support rather than replace frontline operations.

Ari Ketola (COO, Airport College), Jan Timmermans (Head of Ground Operations Standards and Development, TUI Airlines) and Pertti Mero (CEO, Airport College) at the IGHC 2026 in Cairo.

Sustainability, smarter training solutions, the digitalization of air cargo, and stronger partnerships between airlines and ground handlers also were identified as critical priorities for building safer, greener, and more resilient ground operations for the future.
