Ensuring Safe and Humane Live Animal Transport

Transporting live animals by air requires the highest standards of care, attention, and professionalism. Every year, millions of animals travel by air – from family pets accompanying their owners to valuable livestock and rare exotic species. Ensuring their welfare throughout the journey is essential.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has developed the Live Animals Regulations (LAR), a global standard recognized and followed by airlines, freight forwarders, and ground handlers around the world. The LAR provides guidance on procedures, container specifications, and welfare practices needed to ensure the safe transport of live animals.

To support this mission, we at Airport College International have developed our Live Animals eLearning course, tailored to the specific needs of different operational roles within the air transport chain.

LAR training for Passenger Service, Ramp Handling and Cargo personnel.

Animals Travel in Cabin Too – A Focus for Passenger Services

Live animals are not only transported in the cargo hold – many travel in the cabin with their owners. This includes service animals, emotional support animals, and pets small enough to fit under a seat. It's important for passenger services staff to ensure that all documentation is in order and that containers meet IATA standards.

Ensuring Animal Welfare in Ramp Handling

Ramp operations are a critical touchpoint for live animals travelling in the hold. Proper handling at this stage has a directly impacts on the animal welfare. Ramp personnel must be trained to minimise stress and prevent injury during loading, unloading, and transit.

Frequent Flyers in Cargo – Cargo Staff and Live Animal Shipments

The cargo environment often handles large volumes of live animal shipments, including racehorses, day-old chicks, and exotic species. Freight forwarders, cargo acceptance staff, and warehouse staff need to understand the requirements around container types, labelling, documentation, and routing. Our eLearning course addresses these issues and prepares cargo teams to manage live animal shipments in full compliance.

Raising Standards for Animal Transport

The Live Animals Regulations eLearning Course is an important step in ensuring that animals are treated with the care and respect they deserve throughout their journey, regardless of their purpose or destination.

The course is aimed at ground handling staff (passenger, ramp and cargo handling teams), pilots, cabin crew, animal attendants and forwarding agents. The course content is fully aligned with the guidelines of the IATA Live Animals Regulations (LAR).
